    Decent low priced printer

    Posted .

The HP Officejet 5255 is decent for a low priced printer. It's not perfect, but it should fit most needs without an issue. Set up is easy-- like most things these days you can use an app to set it up (it's almost required) or you have the option to set it up from the front of the printer. It's MUCH easier from the app, and fortunately the app is easy to use. Install it, find your printer on the network, and you'll have to go back and forth a couple of times. After a few minutes you'll be all set to go. The print quality is good for both pictures and documents. If you have email on your phone or tablet and the app installed you can print right from your email. The same with your photos--you can print directly from the photos on your phone. The app is actually very handy--if you have more than one printer you can choose the one you want to print from, you can adjust the paper size and quality, and even edit your photos before you print. Overall it's very useful. Pictures turn out terrific--color reproduction is accurate and pictures look as detailed as they do on your screen. Color reproduction in copies was lacking a bit. I used HP's test page as a test of the copy function. The colors were a bit faded from the original. In the picture I added the original is on the left, the copy is on the right (the picture was taken with a flash and a camera phone under not the best light conditions, but the difference in color fade is pretty obvious). Another drawback is the paper tray is very small. It only holds maybe 50 sheets? You also have to switch settings from photo paper to regular paper, and completely swap paper out. The printer does not auto-detect paper size from what I could tell, so I had to manually adjust that each time I switched. The paper tray itself is a bit cumbersome to get to, with a flip-down lid that you must flip down, and grasp to pull out. This printer is also pretty loud. There is a quiet setting that is actually noticeably quieter, but does take a bit longer to print as well. All in all none of these things are deal breakers, especially for a budget printer. For the price it prints well, particularly from photos, and that's the most important thing.

This hp office key printer is an excellent idea. I really didn't think I would be using it very much, but when I brought it home and hooked it up, I just came up with a thousand little things that I would normally not copy. But it was very handy that I did copy them. I have always said that I love back ups. Now I can make back up pictures and back up documents, like my cars insurance, just as an example. If someone you know is looking for a printer---BUY THIS ONE!!! I LOVE HOW EASY IT IS TO USE!!!

    HP 5255 PRINTER

So far so good. It has a nice touch screen display and instructions right from the display. The WiFi direct didn't work with the android phone. I had to use the HP app for WiFi direct on my GS7 to print from my mobile device. All though it didn't go as planned, I figured it out. Also I like the fact if the color ink runs out, you can still print with just black remaining.

A printer that requires a subscription

    Posted .

This review is for the HP OJ 5252. Imagine getting a new printer at only $100 - that copies / scans / faxes … it must seem too good to be true, right? Now, imagine taking that same printer, however after only printing 20 pages - you’re stopped from printing more … unless you subscribe to a ‘printing payment plan.’ Ahhh, there’s the catch. Printing as a service, out of your home, is what this is. This printer reports every page printed back to HP & if your plan says you can only print 30 pages a month, your printer goes unused. Plans will ding you from $3 and more every month for a pre-specified number of pages. That may be good for some, but this is yet another recurring payment that I don’t want to have to worry about. How does this handle jams? Do the pages count against that? I don’t know - probably best to call HP. Does a blank page at the end of a document (say, page 10 is blank but 1-9 are full color) count towards your limit? Yes it does. Now get this - you are running low on ink -- *you* don’t know you are, but HP does and they will automagically send you ink at no cost -- because that’s included in your monthly subscription. Now THAT sounds cool - except once again, you can’t print until you’re out of ink like normal printers … you can print until you’re out of your ‘free’ pages a month, or until you’re exhausted your current allotment. Never fear! Should you run over & need to print more, no worries - you’ll get a credit card charge. Say you are on a pay plan & you don’t use all of your pages? Rollover pages exist! Rollover pages DO NOT exist, however, for the free pages. So you can’t go 10 months without printing your max free pages a month & have them all available at month 11. I understand the budget constraints & how people need to spend $100 on Certified HP ink (on other printers) can be tough on families and people. For me, this idea is not for me (does that make sense?). I have enough monthly subscriptions to have to worry about a mystery $10 charge because my kids printed extra pages for a report. Now, onto the printer itself. The color is great, quality is great, scanner & app functionality are great. This can print multiple sides & instead of having to scan a page, flip it and continuing on, the tray will feed the pages for you and generate a nice .pdf. The app is a bit clunky and the Admin Interface is how you update the software. For me, the update didn't work and required a reboot of the printer during the install (risky, I know) for it to complete. If I could buy it & use it as any normal printer, that’d be great. Otherwise, I’d pass.

      Hello,

I'm glad that you like how the printer works, but am sorry that you don't like the idea of a subscription to Instant Ink.

The good news is that you don't have to use an Instant Ink subscription with the printer, that is just an option. Many people love the service, but if it is not for you, that is fine.

I hope that clears things up. If you do decide to purchase, you can always contact us for help at: hp.com/contactHP

A great upgrade after years of 'just basic'

Maybe you bought a basic printer few years ago, it works fine if a little clunky at times but now its time to upgrade... you'll be happy you did because HP Printers are getting sooo much better every year. I was overwelmed (and a bit overjoyed) seeing how many advanced and quality features I was getting now for basically the same money. Document feeder?! Printing both sides?! Wireless?! Yes give me all please! Additionally this new printer supports a HP printer ink business model that basically means you could get a lifetime free ink supply for minimal useage but will pay only a bit more as your consumption goes up. Been on it less than a month so hard to draw conclusions but so far very very happy with the extra support. Any cons -- yes, the positioning of the output thingie that catches your prints, right on top of the lid to the paper tray. But no impact on printing characteristics whatsoever so its not a big deal. In short its a buy you really cant go wrong with, the only question you might want to ask yourself later is, should I have taken the next higher model :)

For the record I’ve never owned a printer, I’ve never even setup a printer and with all of that being said I am shocked how smooth setting this printer up was. I followed the instructions included with the printer and it was a breeze! Printing documents directly from my phone with the HP Smart app is so easy as well. I have NOT used a direct cable connection for this printer so I can’t speak on that function, only over WiFi and it works perfectly fine with my phone and desktop (program on PC, app on cellphone). No more going to the city library to print documents! Using the scanning feature is also very easy! I’m impressed all around on this printer.

Easy to Use - Quick to Setup printer/scanner/fax

    Posted .

Very easy to setup and use. Took about 10 minutes start to finish including seeing the printer on my pc and my iPad. Has a nice modern look and feel and is fast and quiet. The scanner is half as loud as my old HP Office jet. The output paper tray is sleek and slides out of the way when not printing. Printing was quick and looks clean. The scanner also makes it easy to scan directly to a pc right from the printer on it's touchscreen interface. It will scan to PDF or Jpg formats. Less choices than some other models, but also less to have to choose from and less to setup. It has a document feeder to quickly scan multiple pages or use the flatbed for 1 page or photo's etc. Overall very easy to use general home office WiFi color printer and scanner.

Great printer, horrible scanner and software

    Posted .

The hardware of this MFP is weak to begin with, but the software is where it really fails. My first attempt with setup was using the wireless connection along with the HP Easy Start app. After an extremely lengthy start up routine from the MFP, there were several issues in doing this. First, after giving all of the credentials for my WiFi network the MFP attempted to setup their Web Services which continued for over 10 minutes and never completed. The Easy Start app never would see the MFP. After restarting the printer and then deleting and reinstalling the app it finally saw the MFP. But any time you power cycle the MFP after that, the app fails to connect unless you remove the device and re-add it. Power cycles of the MFP seem to cause more issues than it could ever fix. As I mentioned, it takes a very long time (~ 2 mins) for the unit to start up. Then every time it wants to run a print head alignment routine. This does little more than waste a bunch of time and ink so that you have to buy more ink. Since the AirPrint connectivity was a strong selling point for me, having to wait two minutes, remove and reinstall the printer before printing is a major failure for me. So then I attempted scanning from the mobile app. I tried a few different scans from the ADF. Usually it takes more than 9 seconds before it even draws the first page in. Then a 300 dpi scan of one page will take over 30 seconds. On a 10 page single-sided document it took 3 minutes and 25 seconds, so you have around 3 pages per minute of scanning speed. Reducing the resolution of the ßscan did not impact scanning speed significantly. Even when I tried to temper my expectations with the relatively low price point, I can not justify the trade off in speed. This was a difficult task to accomplish and took several tries as the app often looses connection with the MFP after 5-7 pages. The settings for scanning in the mobile app are sparse. You have very few adjustments, and double-sided scans are not an option. Scans from the ADF are often skewed by 7-15 degrees. Color scans are washed out and uneven. Monochrome text is better but still not as good as many other scanners that I have used. Then I attempted to use the MFP from my desktop computer to see if it was any better. I installed the software, but during the installation after opting out of the auto-replenishment of ink, the installer hung at a blank white window. I waited 5…..10…..15 minutes and it never would progress. So I tried to close the installer and viola! It suddenly wanted to continue the software installation. After bumbling through the installation, I attempted some printing and scanning and things seems to go well. Still very slow at scanning, but it blazes through the paper and ink. Printed pages were crisp and clear. Images printed on plain paper were actually very good with minimal banding usually associated with inkjet printers. But once I turned off the MFP and then attempted to use it again the next day, all the troubles returned. It took a long time to re-establish the WiFi connection and then the desktop software never could find it completely. I could print but not scan or fax. Since the WiFi performance was so spotty, I decided to try connecting by USB cable direct to my computer. You would think that since the software was already installed and then connection had previously been made that connecting the MFP by USB would “just work”. But that was merely a dream. To get the MFP to recognize the software, I had to remove and reinstall the software, with it’s usual blank white page, close and continue routine. Scanning double-sided documents is a bit of a chore. Since this MFP only has the one scanning element, you have to feed all pages through twice. The scanner driver is good at instructing how to accomplish this and assembling the pages in the correct order. But given how slow it scans, having to run them through twice is too much. Also, scanning from the ADF results in skewed pages as before so it’s clear that it’s a mechanical issue. If you turn on the auto-align feature it will produce mixed results and sometimes even result in a more skewed page image. Duplex printing is one of the strengths. Prints just as you would expect and does it quickly. One other thing to note. If you have to uninstall the software to change the connection or for any other reason, it removes ALL PRINTERS AND SCANNERS used by the computer. This is UNACCEPTABLE! In summary, as a printer this MFP is fast with high quality output. IF you can maintain a connection with your mobile device or computer. As a scanner, it’s slow, inaccurate alignment, uneven/washy color capture. With the connectivity and software issues present, I could not recommend this MFP for anyone.

      Hello,

I am terribly sorry to hear that you're not happy with the printer. This isn't at all the experience that we hope for at all.

I'd recommend updating your printer's firmware. A firmware upgrade can often fix a lot of speed and connectivity problems. Here are some links to resources that can help:
      - The firmware download can be found at:
      support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/model/5158536
      - A troubleshooter to step you through getting a WiFi connection is here:

      - The 'HP Print and Scan Doctor' is often helpful too:

I once had a clunky old HP printer that wasn’t worth the cost of the ink. This new model is excellent. It prints, scans, and copies with ease. The software works well with all of my Apple products and produces a high quality printout. At first, I thought that I would not like the ink replacement program. I now find it very convenient and highly cost effective.

Easy to Set Up with Instant Ink

We bought this printer for my son's online schooling use. It easily connected to our computers and was simple to set up with HP's Instant Ink program. The cartridges that came with the printer were tiny, but the instant ink replacement cartridges are much, much bigger. Our first replacement cartridges arrived just before our starter color cartridge ran out. Perfect timing!

    Good everyday printer

    Posted .

HP printers are exactly as the title states, good everyday printers. My first and only drawback was with the initial setup. The setup process took me a few attempts to connect via the app and it wouldn't find the printer. I worked around that by setting up my wifi connection via the printer itself. What else can you really ask for from a printer these days? It prints documents clear and fast. Scanning is very simple. Color printing isn't going to have you framing anything good but for simple documents you will be fine. The touch screen settings are easy enough to navigate through. Printer ink cartridges would be easy to find for this printer. Overall, a good buy.
