There is not specific HP recommendation. You can contact HP Support if you would like to know the requirements for any RAM that you would be interested in buying. Geek Squad can also provide that information and make the upgrades through their services. It would not void the HP warranty, but HP will not cover those parts. For the external HDD/SDD options, you will just want to make sure it works with the OS of the unit. You can look at the speed of the HDD or get a SSD if you want a faster external.
