“Why do I have a flat battery when the laptop was in boxed? After charging, I checked battery life only to see 8hrs as against between 12 and 18hrs I saw when I searched for the specifications. What is the implication of all these?”

I wouldn't trust what Windows says as far as battery life left. Especially with a new laptop. The laptop won't last 18 hours but probably around 10. These OEM's states these claims but forget to tell you how they tested it. Probably low brightness, no wifi or bluetooth on and etc.
