SSD is ;short for Solid State Drive, and is used for permanent storage, of either applications (the operating system, Office Suite, etc.) or data (photos, videos, tax returns, etc.). Unlike traditional hard drives, there are no moving parts. RAM is short for Random Access Memory, and is used for data and such programs as it may be interacting with at the moment. RAM has never had moving parts. When you turn off a computer, you lose everything in RAM, but nothing on your SSD,

I would advise consulting the HP website or the manual for this model to see exactly what specs the RAM should have, since RAM can have fine differences which make a big difference in compatibility.
