“My brand new Compact runs as soon as I plug it in and I can NOT shut it off at all. I can only shut it off by unplugging it. I have not tried to cook anything in it, because this is a little nerve-racking. Am I missing something?”

It sounds like there's something wrong with it. The only way I can think to check is to push the cancel button as soon as you plug it in. If that doesn't stop it, then return it if you still can.
