“I understand the unit needs to release heat but like many I have my mini in a cabinet. Is this a problem? And if not should I just accept that heat released in an enclosed space is going to be hotter within a confined space?”

Beyond the obvious FIRE problem, you are going to seriously cut into the lifespan of the mini-fridge. If you can run a small fan (like those found in desktop computers or AV cabinets) it will help prevent both issues.
