• Don't know about NYC. See if there are any community recycling programs that will take small appliances. In our area AARP sometimes sponsors recycling programs that take things like old computers and small home electronics.

• Move out of NYC. May be hard for you to believe, but there are sane places elsewhere in the US You might get a used appliance/repair store to remove the 'Freon', which was never the problem they pretended it was. Then it becomes valuable recyclable metals
