“Can this receiver drive large speakers? I keep reading about this unit being good for bookshelf speakers. But I have a wonderful pair of 80s-era, B&W, 8 ohm speakers. Good size: about 2 feet high by 1 foot wide. Can this receiver drive my speakers?”

• Yes! This sucker will push the power to pretty much anything you can wire into it. I have some early 90s 4ohm and 8 ohm speakers (4 total) and 2 12" MTX subwoofers all wired into mine and it shakes the house on full volume :)

• This will drive large speakers. I have it hooked up to a pair of Cerwin Vegas with 12" woofers and it rocks the house!

• Yes, but the sound is not going to be what you're used to at higher volume levels. Bass is lacking. But you can always buy and try and returned. TONS of cheap used ones on ebay for that reason. The yamaha 500BL (I think) has a much better sound quality. I know because I returned my Insignia for the Yamaha.
