Connecting your computer directly to the router can improve the performance with games. Using a cable to connect to the router should provide the maximum speed available from your network.

Connecting over wireless can significantly reduce the speed of data to and from the router. It depends on the router, the speed of its wireless signals and how many active wireless networks are near enough to you to interfere. The Nighthawk should do a pretty good job with interference, but you should be using the 5Ghz channel, not the 2.4Ghz channel for the gaming computer if you need to go wireless.
