This TV is made by insignia, a best by product, I have another older model of this TV, haven't had any issues with it to date. I too didn't want or needed another smart TV, so I looked @ this particular model. Very clear picture for a 720 P nice basic features. 2 HDMI inputs, built-in TV tuner for just straight cable, no cable box needed, decent sounding built-in speakers, etc. I believe your mom would really enjoy this 32", hope this helps with your decision.
