“In the bag with the instructions and ice cube tray was one screw and a black plastic piece that has a hook on one end and and knob on the other. No reference to these items in the instructions. Anyone know what they are for?”

It is for changing the door to swing in the other direction I believe.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I believe that is just an extra screw for when you want to change which side the doors open. If you lose 1 screw, you have a replacement. If you more than 1 than you are screwed. The irony. As for the plastic, it is probably to hold the screw in place when tightening it.
