“The unit is always running when plugged in even when the power is off. When the power isn't "on", it is running in reverse and sucking air out of the room and blowing it outside. Do I just have to unplug it every time I'm done using it to avoid this?”

There is a switch at the plug for absolute off. There may be a condensate heater to help remove water from a condensate pan. One of the reasons the exhaust is so warm. Haven't read that far up in the manual
