• I'm using this rather than paying more ordering from HP online, I have an HP envy notebook and I've had no issues using this off-brand adapter so far. As long as the adapter is compatible with your dell you should be good! :)

• You CAN get an off-brand, but look for one on some other tech site, a brand such as PWR+. This insignia cable did not work with my Dell computer.

• I think you can. It is preferable to same the same brand as the computer but that means that you will pay more.
