“Many mornings around 6am the buttons at the top of the unit blink as though the proximity sensor is being activated even though it is not. This does not appear to be a random event. Any ideas?”

I have the same thing. This might be the issue of proximity sensor using change of light intensity to detect motion. So it depends on the lighting condition of your room. Mine is acting like this randomly, at no specific time.
