Hello Jeff, Thank you for your sharing your experience with the Voice Smart Bluetooth Speaker. In regards to your question this device is battery operated which means it needs to be plugged in. The flashing light is an indicator that the battery is low (>20%), just need to plug it in to recharge it. Gaby R. - Insignia Support
