It doesn't so much damage the fringe as it tries to vacuum it up attempting to take the entire carpet with it and causes the Roomba to jam and need to be manually freed from the fringe and reset. I mostly use mine on hardwood floors and I take up the two fringed rugs by the front and back doors before activating the Roomba.
