Wouldn't work too well on high pile carpets or shaggy rugs, but didn't have a problem transitioning from flat to carpet. It would scrunch up the edges of the carpet if it's not stiff enough.

I have a hard wood first floor with area rugs, I was surprised to see that the unit was going under the couches and tables and taking care of the rug in those spots too, places that I rarely got to with a traditional vacuum.
