• You can do either, but we prefer to have it lay flat since there are passive radiators on each side and having it standing can affect the sound quality.

• I think it's meant to lay flat. There's a small sturdy squared "foot" area that it stands on very securely. It won't roll around like a flip speaker can, so it feels more steady and sturdy to me. I've never tried standing it on end, since that would block a speaker.
