“We have many birds in the back yard. It's too hot to sit outside, but we can't hear the birds from inside. I would like a reasonably priced mic to allow the birdsong to be background noise inside. Any suggestions?”

It sounds like you'd want a mic that's omni-directional. The JLab Talk Go would meet that requirement, however I highly doubt that it's weather-proof. If there you have a way to protect it from the weather without blocking sound, or weather isn't a concern, then this should work great.
