“Grill appears dark in some areas, is this normal or is it not; our concern is fire danger if the the heat element Lt is burning the grill. Great heater, purchased at Target about two years ago. Thanks.”

Mine got a little discolored as well but I never noticed any problem. I believe it is a cosmetic change.
