Yes, the timer works just fine while the Microwave oven is cooking. My only complaint about this unit is the door is really wide and I have to lean back to open the door. If you have young kids they might hang on the door opening it. So I'm guessing this might be a problem as the unit gets older. I have the microwave venting to the outside of the house out the rear of the microwave. This allows me to get all the kitchen smells and smoke out of the kitchen. It does a great job removing smoke from the normal stove. I do have this unit mounted over the stove. Over all I like this microwave.
