“Can this microwave be installed flush with the upper cabinets (mine are 16 inches from wall, including doors) or is there a vent or something in the top that would require it being moved out further than the cabinet faces?”

It can be mounted flush with the upper cabinet. There are three venting options and it's easy set it to what you prefer. Mine came top vented, and I switched it to rear vented. You just need to remove a few screws and change the blower orientation and screw it back in place. The third option is to set it to vent thru vents on the top front.
