• Tucked in. Extended adds 4”. You only extend while cooking, but it’s worth it.

• I'm guessing you wanted to know if the fans work tucked in or not? Yes the fans work both ways. The reason for extending is to have more of straight up flow of the steam or smoke from the range or cooktop below. This will vent all or nearly all of the smoke or steam.
