It's just the difference between how many dimming zones are in the tv, full array = 1 zone, local dimming = 4-8 zones and so on and so forth until u get to OLED which has per pixel dimming which means instead of an area of the screen being dimmed for the display of "black" objects or darkness, the individual pixels are turned off.

The areas that it can dim are much larger than those for a Full-Array Local Dimming TV which is a Direct Lit LED LCD TV. Full-Array Local Dimming refers to an array of individual LEDs behind the LCD panel that are all pointing out towards the viewer. The most common method used to dim these type of TVs is a set number of zones. Each zone is responsible for a certain area of the screen.
