• I don't have Direct TV but this box says it records direct from USB. It is not programmable.

• Mediasonic Homeworx makes an Over the Air tuner "set top box" that records via USB 3.0 and your flash or USB hard drive, but just the OTA channels that come in via your antenna you attach. You can record by programming, though, like old VCRs :) So ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS and a few more depending on your reception. I get all those with a $40 indoor antenna, for example.
