Hi Anosmia -- In my case, I leave the SideKick out and the lid open until it dries (a couple of hours usually), then slide it back in. You can technically / physically slide it in without fully clicking the door down (so yes, there's a small gap), but you may not have the kind of air flow / circulation for it to dry in a reasonable amount of time to prevent a mildew smell. So I would suggest just leaving it out / open until it dries (you can, of course, wipe it down to speed up the drying process), then slide it back in.
