This will work from a modem connection for additional ports. It DOES NOT issue DHCP, so you would have to use a computer to issue IP addresses to additional devices (setup as DHCP server), or set each static and tell Windows to share your internet connection to network. Router would be better if you are not technically savvy, or if you want WiFi

BUT this is a dumb switch. this is to expand your ports of a router. you will need something to assign addresses and manage all the traffic. this being a dumb switch will not do that. You can plug it into a gigabit modem, but most of the time the modem will just hand off the external IP address, then you will only be able to access internet on your one device. You have to have some sort of router. You can either turn off the wifi or leave it on for guests and or your phones.
