• I also had a apple time capsule with a range extender, replaced it with the velop system. Much better coverage and faster. Now backup my files to a seagate external drive. Sold my time capsule on eBay.

• During setup, you can chose to install this with a connection either directly to a modem or to a router, as you mention. You would need to turn off the WiFi capability of your Airport router to avoid interference.
