• The pencil holder is at the top of the case. You can lay the whole thing flat, but it is resting on the keyboard if not sprawled out.

• It holds the pencil at the top of the case where it opens and lays flat with the case in in use or in storage.

• The holder for the Apple Pencil (or Logitech Crayon) is just inside the magnetic flap the secures the case shut when closing it all up. Yes, it does lay flat for writing and drawing. I think this is the best case that’s ever been made for an iPad (other than the iPad Pro).
