Why do I need a bridge? null

The Smart Bridge allows you to control your Caséta Wireless controls and Lutron Serena® remote controlled shades from anywhere with your smartphone, using the free Lutron App for Caséta Wireless. The bridge provides multiple benefits over Wi-Fi products: It is ultra-fast and reliable ensuring your lights react instantly every time you adjust them from the app or Pico remote control. The bridge prevents the cluttering of your Wi-Fi network by acting as the single point of connection to the cloud. It is also easier to set-up and enables more local control/integrations with other smart home products. If you have other compatible bridge/hub devices that use Z-Wave you do not need to have a second one. The bridge is basically to control the device via the internet using/integrating other compatible systems like Alexa services, Apple Homekit, Vivint alarm system, etc. It will allow it to install the application to the phone, and create scenes, schedule, and control up to 50 devices (Lutron dimmers, switches, as wall/plugin and windows blinds.) In my case, I purchase the Lutron kit, to replace the old bridge/Hub from Wink after that company changes the free tier service to pay only without providing any addons or new features from their services. (the change was mostly an ultimatum to preform the pay in 7 days or lost the capacity to control all my devices) Note=Lutron Hub/bridge only controls Lutron devices and do not have a monthly fee.

I have the bridge so that it connects to SmartThings. This allows alexa etc to control the switch. You can still use the dimmers without bridge, but you won’t get the “smart” features you are most likely buying this for. When I had “Wink“ I was able to use this without a bridge. I have since went to SmartThings and needed the bridge. There is a video out there on how to connect without the bridge-not sure about the functionality.

All Lutron Caseta product lines use Clear Connect RF technology to communicate. The hub is a main terminal from you house to the internet. Your phone app talks to the Lutron Cloud then the cloud talks to your hub, then you hub talks to your switches.
