No. It has Alexa built in. In other words, it acts as an Alexa device as well as a Portal TV. Note: It’s tough to find this anywhere but you currently cannot use this with Zoom or Facebook Live. The regular portals you can, but not Portal TV. They say it’s coming though. You can use Facebook Messenger and What’s App to video chat which is pretty cool.

No, you do not need Alexa to use Portal. You do need a Facebook account. You can use Messenger on a mobile device to connect to Portal TV, and others that you want to include on a video call can use either Messenger or another Portal Device. We used Portal on Thanksgiving with my family. Family members in Savannah, GA; Columbus, Ohio; Boulder, Colorado; Washington, DC; Denver, CO; San Jose, CA and Reno, Nevada.

Alexa came bundled into the product. Don't seem to need Alexa to use the Portal for calls. We don't use Alexa ourselves for anything, so I'm not the best one to answer this question. Doesn't Best Buy or Portal itself have resources?
