Not sure on the memory requirements for your engineering program but I have my adjusting software on it (Xactimate and XA) and it runs like a charm!

Because you're not on a desktop your renders are going to be slower than a desktop with a dedicated CAD strong video card, but in the field the Surface will be a great fall back for on the fly mods. Having used Solidworks, I'm not sure I'd be patient enough to run this is my dedicated desktop, but for updates and field changes, heck yeah!
