Yes, the rear speakers are upfiring. No, they need to be plugged into the wireless subwoofer to work.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You can lay them sideways and they'll up fire, same with the front surround speakers. They aren't wireless, all surround speakers plug into the subwoofers. The subwoofers are the only things that are wireless.
