By directly link to router if you mean cabled to router-no. My base router has WiFi and I have the extender downstairs in my kitchen-linked by WiFi to base router just fine.

In my case, the extender is about 40 feet away from the main router. that seems to be an ideal distance, the extender gets strong signal, but it's not too close as to cause interference. it is very easy to setup and link together. And with the extender, I have excellent coverage through my entire house.
