Disabling the onboard Wifi through the device manager is the better choice. I tried removing the antennas and it didn't go well, as the old Wi-Fi kept interfering or trying to reconnect even though I switched to the new adaptor properly. Everything only worked really well after disabling the onboard Wifi and that meant leaving or removing the antennas didn't matter.
