I can only try to answer a part of your question because I don't know about combined modem/routers; I've only seen separate modems - usually given to you when you sign up for a particular ISP, and separate routers. If your modem also is integrated with a router, adding any other router has the chance of competing with the signal the integrated router is sending out. If the modem is separate then there is no problem with the setup. Good luck with it.

I have the xFinity cable modem/router and am blessed with a house wired with CAT 5e ethernet, TV coax and 2 phone jacks in every room. In my home office I come out of the wall with the TV coax and go to the xFinity cable modem/router. From the xFinity I go back into the wall with a phone line and an internet feed. In a bedroom closet I have a hookup panel. I come out of the panel with the internet feed supplied from the home office and into a simple 4 channel switch. From the switch I go to some rooms where I want hard wired internet, e.g., the TV in the family room for Netflix, Disney+, etc. I also go from the switch to the Orbi base station in the hookup panel closet which provides wireless internet in the bedroom and hallway. From the Orbi base station I go into two different rooms via the hook-up panel. In each of those two rooms (kitchen/family room area and dining room/living room area - we have a long single story house) I have an Orbi satellite that is connected through the ethernet jack in that room. The ethernet jack receives its signal from the hook up panel in the bedroom closet With my xFinity gigabit internet service I see 920 mbs download in the dining room which is the farthest room from the xFinity cable modem/router. Thus, I have four wireless internet zones: home office via the xFinity cable modem/router, in the bedroom with the hook up panel in the closet, in the kitchen/family room area and in the dining room/living room area. Inb addition, I have the hard wired internet connections for my TV, etc. I hope this helps
