The signal uses the electrical currents in your house. So the signal will go far as where your electrical outlets will go. But if the outlets wiring was changed it may not work, since the wiring might be different.

I have it plugged it to the router downstairs and use it an upstairs room. The connection is great.

I believe my signal is running through about 500 feet of wiring between the cable modem it's attached to and my PC that's using the network connectivity. The signal seems near full strength, so double this distance is probably where the effectiveness of this drops off dramatically.
