• you need an ISP (internet service provider). this allows you to connect to your modem and provide internet to devices.

• It all depends on how you house is wired. If you have an older house you might need a cable modem plus the router. It is best to find out if your house is wired with cat cord first that will tell you what you need before you purchase anything

• As long as you already have a modem, yes. If you don't already have a modem, you have three choices - "rent" a modem from your internet service provider, buy your own modem, or buy your own gateway (ie. a modem/router combination).
