QuestionAbout how many devices can be connected on the Wifi and still run effectivelyMy two roommates and I are looking for a new router and were wondering about how many devices we this network can support. (ie. 3 Laptops and then smartphones). We have heard good things about this router but don't want to have poor access as a result of buying too small of a router

- Answer Well we have 2 laptops, 2 computers and 2 Ipads, also 1 LG phone and 2 Samsung phones and have no problems. And also play xbox on 2 different places. Hope this helps

QuestionDoes this router have to be connected to a modem?I do not own a desktop, only a laptop. Would this router work by simply connecting it to a cable connection and enabling wireless compatibility?

- Answer Yes, you must have a modem, which you'll get when you sign up for Internet service. You'll then get the signal to the modem, then connect the router. You'll also have to connect your laptop to the router initially, to configure it, set your wireless network name (SSID) and wireless password. You can then disconnect the cable, and surf wirelessly from then on.

QuestionNew Question: Using wired desktop and and Wireless Laptop with Netgear Wireless-N RouterLots of answers to my original question but need some details: Is this correct: Connect desktop to router; router to cable modem; cable modem to cable coax? Will wireless laptop automatically be able to access internet when I power it up? I want to kepp my desktop wired and I do NOT want to share files between desktop and laptop. How do I keep my desktop files from being accessed by the wireless laptop?

- Answer Your list of connections are correct. Make sure to use the correct port from router to cable modem! A wireless laptop (or any other wireless device) can connect automatically IF the device is correctly configured to do so. This means naming your network on the router and setting up security. Use your desktop for these tasks. Files on one computer will not be visible ("shared") to other computers unless you specifically set it up to do so.

- Answer Netgear is not an internet service provider. You would use this in combination with a modem to provide a wireless network in your home. These would replace the equipment that you are supplied through your internet service provider, and would most likely lower your monthly bill (most internet providers charge you a fee for using their modems and routers).

- Answer Sure you can dude, just get the router as a wireless point so don't turn off the wireless setting on the router and make sure to have your laptop wireless option on, usually this option is mark by a blue light. Now you need to get on your routers settings so you can change your password so you don't have your access point open or may be you would like to share your internet with your neightbor that is your choice. PS. Your desktop will have to have a Ethernet cable connected to your router and them you can play with the wireless connection on the other device (s) . good luck

- Answer Best Buy is not an internet service provider. You can buy a router or modem or combo unit to use with your internet service. Most providers charge a monthly fee for using their equipment (usually around $10), so it would give you some savings every month, there.

- Answer I apologize in advance if I am being too basic in my explanation. As long as you configure the router to act as the DHCP server for the WIFI your wireless devices would have access to the segment of the network that the router would create. Connecting the Router to the switch will give the WIFI devices access to the wired network through the wireless router (for the purpose of sharing a common internet connection for example), however, only the router will show on the wired network (the MODEM is most likely acting as your default DHCP server) as only the Router will have an IP address on the wired network. The biggest issue is that you may get an IP conflict with both devices playing DHCP server. Personally, I would put the router in front of the switch connected to the MODEM's LAN (or uplink) port, turn off the MODEMs DHCP service (allow the router to handle all the DHCP services) and then connect the switches uplink or LAN port to one of the ethernet ports on the router. You may find that the router has enough ports on the back that you don't need the separate switch.

- Answer We have 3 smart tv's, 4 smart phones, 4 laptops and 2 desktops. Have had no issues. Fixed all of our streaming issues. I think you will be very satisfied with its performance.
