This is NOT a cable modem; it is a WiFi router. You would plug this into a cable modem to add WiFi if your modem didn't have it, or if the WiFi on the modem wasn't working very well.

Netgear makes a wonderful 3.0 compatible combination Modem/Router ... at a very reasonable price, I think in the N600 range for about $130. If you already have 3.0 Modem, YES this will work... The netgear 300 is at the bottom end of their line.
