“Is this compatible with DSLR nikon cameras, it only says SLR and its a gift, so I want to make sure I get the right hardware. The person that I am buying it for has a DSLR camera so I just want to check and make sure it would be able to work with his.”

Yes, it works with all DX Nikon SLRs, which are all DSLRs.
