Hello, while I haven't used this lens for exactly those examples I have used it for baseball games. I will be using it for football games coming this season but, haven't had a chance just yet. While I've read some reviews on its capability in low light being sub-par I would say your camera body really drives that issue. I have this lens on a d750 body and I have to say, the low light capability is exceptional to me. I do use auto-ISO under these circumstances and that seems to be the perfect medium. The auto focus on this lens is superb. I say buy it, and if it doesn't fit your needs return it and try the Tamron or Sigma 150-600.

Regarding "low light", some venues are better than others when it comes to lighting. There is one simple solution, shoot another lens (if you have one) at 5.6 at the venue/s in question. You won't get "the reach" but from a light perspective it should give you an idea if this lens will work in your conditions. Keep in mind that all lenses have limitations as well as pros and cons to each one. There is no "do all" lens in existence.Learn the limitations of your lens and work around them. I have or had, every lens made by Nikon from the 300 2.8 VR down, for the last 15 years. I currently own 12 Nikon lenses NOT including duplicates. This is my second 200-500, and if 5.6 will work for your lighting setup/s it's an excellent lens for the $.
