The batteries have to come out if you are using rechargeable ones. If you are using disposable Alkaline or Li-Ion you just swap out old batteries for new ones.

You have to take the batteries out to charge them. It comes with four AA alkaline batteries.

The batteries do need to be taken out of the camera to recharge them. The B500 does not allow for charging AA-type rechargeable batteries - in the camera. You might want to use a backup set of AA-alkaline or another set of rechargeable AA-type batteries while you have one set charging.
