While the Nikon D3400 DSLR is a great low-light camera that can capture amazing images of the nighttime sky, it is not designed for astrophotography work. The only Nikon camera that was designed for this type of work is the Nikon D810A, which has an IR filter that's optimized for H-alpha red tones. When taking images of nighttime sky you will want to use a lens that allows you to get as much expanse of the sky as possible. You will also want to have a lens that has an aperture of 2.8 or less. Some of the popular NIKKOR wide-angle lenses for astrophotography include: AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED, AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED, AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G and AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f/1.4G ED, which are all completely compatible with the Nikon D3400.
