I think you need to be on line in order to play.

Some of the multiplayer games are better with it, EX: Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 8, ect. Some, like Pokemon Sword/Shield or Mario Maker 2, lose certain functions that require being "online", but the main story is still playable.

You will need this if you purchase a game and want to play it online, however (Splatoon 2 is the reason we purchased this, though now my kids have found other online games they want to try as well).
