“My understanding is the second zone plays analog only - no hdmi. If i have my cable TV connected via both HDMI and component, will the sound play on Zone 2? Do apps like Spotify and Pandora play over Zone 2? This seems like such a limitation for Zone 2.”

Anything you can play in Zone 1 can also be heard in Zone 2, but it will be limited to stereo sound regardless of any sound field settings. My connection to Zone 2 is via analog cables.
