What Panasonic has officially said, "no difference in quality." Well, be patient and wait for professional reviews from high end magazines -- otherwise, if you already own, just enjoy.

The ESS Saber was not only utlized by Oppo, Panasonic’s own updated version’s literature touts it as superior. Your question put the team in a bit of an awkward position, either degrade the first gen (albeit not dramatically) or claim the superiority of the Saber. That superiority is more applicable to the audio quality than video.listening is important, the ESS on a chip-vs-chip basis is the gold standard.
