The newer bulbs can be controlled locally with bluetooth, however, a Philips Hue Hub will be needed to control them with any home assistant or to control more than 20+ bulbs

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.My understanding is that the hue bulbs will pair with non-Hue systems. In some cases you may not get a comparable level of granular control with a non-Hue system, but being both Zigbee and Bluetooth devices, they should work.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.My initial purchase was the starter system which, yes, did come with a hub. If I am not mistaken the Philips whiz bulbs don’t require a hub. However, the connection didn’t go so well for me and I returned them.
