“For me to connect these lights with the app, I need to order the hue bridge? I’ve never used Phillips lighting before and don’t have the physical router in the same location as the lights.”

Philips Hue light strip can work without a bridge. You to control your bluetooth enabled Philips Hue lights with Bluetooth app. However, if you plan on enhancing or integrating with other Philips Hue smart lightings, then you need to have hue bridge (hub to connects all of your Philips lights) to connect.
