I unplugged it. If you leave it plugged in and close the lid, sanitizing process begins and light on outer lid comes on. It does turn off automatically after about ten minutes.

You could leave it plugged in with the lid open, or you could close the lid again, but it'd run an empty cycle (unless you put something in there you didn't need again until you went out, like keys or credit cards). Basically, it will run a cycle anytime the lid closes. The newer model available from the PhoneSoap website offers a push-button start but is more expensive and not available from Best Buy.
